Did you eat more Halloween candy than you planned last week? Okay admit it, are you still eating it even though the costumes got put back in the closet, and the pumpkins got thrown out? Are you sneaking the candy after the kids have gone to sleep? A bout of overeating or even a binge is bound to happen sometimes. That's why bouncing back is one of the most important habits you'll ever learn.

Here is a typical thought pattern that bingers have. Let's call it, "The Old Way." "When I slip up and eat something I know I shouldn't, I throw in the towel. I use that as permission to go on an overeating spree. I tell myself I'll start again tomorrow, or Monday, or next month. I already messed up, so why bother?"

In Shrink Yourself we teach you The Ten Healthy Habits that you need to know to master your weight. One of these is bouncing back. It's the habit that helps you get back on track when you eat something you wish you hadn't. We offer you activities to help you understand why you give up, when you have a slip up. In your Habit Diary we help you look at other areas in your life where you give up, and offer you insights into how those character traits affect your overeating.

Here is the way a member rewrites their negative thinking after they've acquired the healthy habit of bouncing back. "When I slip up and eat something I know I shouldn't, I forgive myself and make a better food choice the next time. I get right back on track and I don't spend too much time thinking of my mistake. It's about progress, not perfection."

Don't let one little indulgence prevent you from managing your weight for a lifetime. If you'd like to start rewriting the negative statements that you say to yourself, Click here to try the Shrink Yourself program now and learn how.

It's nearly impossible to strive to never have a binge or bout of overeating. You are going to make less than optimal choices some of the time. When you make a food choice that you wish you hadn't, you don't have to wait till tomorrow to get back on track. You can recommit to your health, your weight goals, and yourself at any moment. Just pick yourself up. Put down the candy. And get back on the right path. The quicker you can do this, the shorter distance off track you'll find yourself.

I've gotten into a bad habit of bingeing every Saturday night. I make good food choices the next day, but can't seem to get out of the Saturday night thing.

Plan to go out on Saturday nights - but if this is not possible, plan healthy activities like swimming or phone a friend. Also, as you know water fills one up so have a couple of glasses and then perhaps a skimmed-milk hot chocolate. Good luck! It's hard, eh?

Many people actually plan a binge for a night like Saturday night. it could be a reward for putting up with a disappointing week or something to look forward to. You'll need to train your brain to look forward to something else. It will take having a binge-free Saturday night a couple of times to prove to yourself that you can. This is what we help you do at Shrink Yourself.

I'm afraid at any moment I could slip up and go into a binge. It's a constant battle, and I think I'm winning, but I need something to snap me out of this constant worry of failure...

I have found Judith T Beck's The Diet soluation an excellent way to re train your brain to deal with the worry of failure. It uses CBT to handle and change thoughts like that. Good luck. Greg

Does anyone have any advice for evening snacking. I am pretty in control all day, but after dinner, I graze from one junk food to another. I now know what smokers go thru trying to quit. Thank You....Sally

Sally, I have found that the best way from eating junk at night is to make sure I eat enough calories in mostly healthy foods during the day. Then I feel satisfied because my cells are nourished and I've had enough calories that I feel no hunger before bed.

Sally, The evening is a difficult time for me also. What has helped me most is to keep junk food out of the house completely. Because my husband likes some junk food, we have set up different cabinets for food storage for each of us. The moment it takes me to think about whether I would go into his cabinet is often the moment I need to stop the thinking pattern that leads to consumption.

What do you do if you know you need to lose weight, but just don't have the will power or the motivation to even get started?

Jennifer  said...

For an evening snack, I have a swiss miss diet hot chocolate. They are 25 calories and if you make it hot enough it takes time to finish it and usually helps with my cravings....
