Has a song ever come on the radio in your car and suddenly you're in tears? A moment before you didn't even know that you were sad and suddenly you're filled with emotion. Music can be a great way to access and manage your emotions. And when your emotions are in check you don't have to escape from them into the arms of food.

Cynthia Bulik, PhD director of the University of North Carolina Eating Disorders Program and the author of Crave: Why You Binge Eat and How to Stop recommended in an article in the March, 2009 issue of O Magazine to create playlists for each mood -anxiety, depression, anger, boredom. "When you feel the urge to eat, listen to the appropriate music or podcast instead."

Whether you use music or exercise or journaling to manage your emotions, the key is to keep in mind that you always have choices. Eating is NEVER your only option (even though it can feel that way). Food passes time and fills your belly but it doesn't get you to the heart of the matter. A great song, symphony or samba can have you crying, relaxed you or dancing in mere seconds. Music can be a mainline to your truest self, your real needs and your deepest emotions.

What style of music, artist or song do you find most comforting?

I love music especially classic and I know it is powerful in affecting your emotions. There is certain music I can't listen because it makes me cry. I would very much like to visit the Clinic for Eating Disorders at UNC. Txs.

Sooo true! Just last week I was on a bad binge day and I went to this mexican restaurant with my mother and they were playing romantic music and I felt like, had I heard this music before, I wouldn't have eaten. Because this music, didn't quite comfort me but took me to another place- a place where there used to be romance however illusory in my life and where there were no cravings for food because I was filled with love. That's feeling is what I need to achieve but coming from within me and not dependant on somebody else.

What a great idea - I have never thought of using music to get me out of the feeding-frenzy. My favourite rock cd is now in my player in the kitchen - I'm going to give this a go!

I agree that music is a good way to access emotions and I use it regularly. My music choice depends on how I feel. Sometimes I use fast music to motivate me to exercise. For example, Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie" gets me moving every time. Pachelbel's canon evokes a feeling of serenity. Songs like, "I Dreamed a Dream," helps me reach for my inner strength. The music of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole is soul stirring, even when I don't understand the words, and helps me realize I'm not alone in my struggle.
