Do you dream of a day when you won’t ever have to think about managing your weight? Do you imagine that once you finally lose the weight your worries about food will be gone? Do you wish that it would all just go away? If you do, you’re not alone. This week’s tip will help with all these questions and more.

Expectations lead to disappointments. That’s why it’s so important to have realistic expectations. It is realistic that you will get better and better at dealing with your emotions without food. It is realistic to believe that one day you will be the one that’s in charge of what and how much you eat. It is realistic to know that with the right help and information you can lose the weight you want. However, it’s unrealistic to believe you will ever get it perfect. It’s unrealistic to believe that you will never turn to food for comfort again. It’s unrealistic to think that your weight will not fluctuate at all. Think of a doctor’s scale or a balance. It is always moving a little bit. As you work towards leaving emotional eating behind, you will continue to make little adjustments in your lives. The more realistic your expectations, the less you will be disappointed. The goal is to view your weak spots, not with judgment or harshness, but with curiosity. The moments when you are tempted to return to food for comfort are actually red flags from your heart and mind, pointing out that you need a little bit of understanding, some more gentleness, and a dash more self-acceptance.

Dear Claudia: I am 50 lbs. overweight walking is one of the best, gentlest things you can do for yourself. I never feel "better with loads of energy" like the commercials say you will, but I can't say I feel worse. Perhaps it's what you're thinking about while you're walking - if you're thinking sad/frustrating thoughts about your job loss, paying bills, etc., you feel worse because of mental/emotional fatigue -- NOT physical. Try headphones with upbeat music to drown out those negative voices and keep putting one foot in front of the other! You GO, Girl!

I am sorry that you are still feeling tired Claudia - could you be depressed - I would be - walking is one of the best things for depression also. Please - if you can - talk to a doctor about it. If you do not have medial insurance there are clinics with sliding scales. You will feel so much better if you can just keep moving - Miss Kitty has some wonderful suggestions. You are doing great by taking care of yourself - this will help to reduce stress, give you goals and motivate you further! Keep working towards a healthier and happier you! Things will improve!

Great article! I agree it is the very small but constructive actions in life which when repeated enough cannot help but generate large results that our hearts so desire. So don't think too big, just think now and think today. What actions can we do right now or today that will create what we desire tomorrow?
