Tip of the Week: Redefine Delicious

Do you look at a plate of nachos or a huge sundae and think to yourself, 'delicious?' If so, think again. The way you view food can change the choices you make.

David A. Kessler, the Harvard-trained doctor, lawyer, medical school dean, former commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, and author of the forthcoming book The End of Overeating explains that they changed the way people viewed cigarettes and now we need to change the way we view fattening, unhealthy food. In a recent article in The Washington Post written by Lyndsey Layton Dr. Kessler was quoted saying, "We did this with cigarettes it used to be sexy and glamorous but now people look at it and say, 'That's not my friend, that's not something I want.' We need to make a cognitive shift as a country and change the way we look at food. Instead of viewing that huge plate of nachos and fries as a guilty pleasure, we have to . . . look at it and say, 'That's not going to make me feel good. In fact, that's disgusting.' " This week's tip is to try taking a look at the foods that sabotage your efforts, not as friends, but as foes. The simple beauty of a perfectly ripened tomato, a crisp salad, and a bowl of berries could be even more delicious than the most decadent dessert. It's all in how you look at it.

I have come to realise the benefit of healthy eating. Wish I knew by then what I know now, I'd be all the better for it.

Today, I ate four bowls of vegetable soup, a vegetable sandwich, a bowl of fruit and a bowl of oatmeal. I also ate half a bag of nacho chips. Go figure!

This morning while reading your article I had whole wheat pancakes with walnuts and dates. No butter or syrup needed. It was truely delicious...and healthful! If we can take a moment to relish a piece of ripe fresh fruit the way we do with a decadent desert, our bodies will tell us which is more delicious and satisfying!

I'm thinking rightaway "How can I tell myself that certain foods are just as bad for me as cigarettes" Then the thought came into my head"practice makes progress"

It's hard to compare cigarette smoking to eating. You can quit smoking cold turkey but you can't quit eating. It would be much easier to quit eating bad foods if we were never exposed to them, but they are all around, everyone eats.

I agree with Ale that comparing cigarettes with a plate of nachos dripping with cheese is comparing apples and oranges because even cigarette smokers would agree that cigarette smoking is disgusting. In order to change the way we think about nachos we would have to change our taste buds. Yes, fruits and vegetables are delicious but so are nachos. I think a more helpful way would be to have some type of self-talk to the effect of, "while these nachos are delicious, eating them will clog my heart.

I found that after changing your eating habits, healthy foods become so commonplace in your diet that you start to crave them. I started jonesin' for diet foods like tomatoes, oatmeal, fruit, rice cakes, after I started eating better. I think I just substituted healthy favorites or treats for the bad ones I used to have, and I still feel like I'm enjoying food.

why oh why are healthy foods so darn expensive? I would be broke if all I bought was produce and healthier versions of food. until then, i will have to make do with what I can afford.

Tessajetta I couldn't agree more!! In our society of being told to eat healhier why isn't it more affordable?! There is no way I could afford to eat how I would truly like to eat also, especially organic, it's way too expensive!! But money always dictates right? Does anyone really care about our health or just the almighty dollar?!
