Tip of the Week: Replace Foods Instead of Eliminating Them

There are fuel foods (foods we need to thrive) and fun foods (food that are simply delicious to eat). Last year a series of best-selling cookbooks introduced ways for parents to hide healthy foods in kid-friendly foods (like broccoli in brownies). You can help your weight loss effort by doing something similar with the rebellious child inside of you. For example, a Quizno's Tuna Melt has over 2,000 calories and 175 grams of fat. Hard to believe, I know. If you love Tuna Melts (or anything else) you don't have to deprive yourself, you just need to make educated choices. You can make yourself a tuna melt with as little as 500 calories and 10 grams of fat. No one ever said that you have to feel deprived to lose weight. You just have to understand that you might not be able to have everything you want, exactly when you want it, and in the exact same way. To soothe that child inside you that might feel deprived by the word "diet" offer him/her creative alternatives to your favorite foods. This week look for ways to enjoy the things you like in new and improved ways that respect your health and well-being. If you discover anything, share your ideas with us in the comments section below.

An Australian housewife is now marketing her series of cookbooks in the USA. in 2009, after huge successes in Australia. Her name is Annette Syms and her series of books No. 1-5 are called, 'Symply Too Good To Be True'. Each of these books contains low fat, low sugar alternative recipes to all-time Aussie meal, dessert, baking, and snack favourites. Check them out! They are marvellous!

Lisa Lillien the founder of Hungry girl also has a book out which has loads of lovely meals, desserts including low calorie french fries, chocolate cake etc etc. Have a sneak peek at the website and you wont be dissapointed !

Thanks for those tips, and for those great resources, Myra and Lori! I have just begun this program, and from moment one, it resonated and made very clear why I behave the way I do. Now I understand it and have the power to overcome it. Even little things like grape or cranberry juice in a glass of seltzer is better than downing a whole bottle of sugar-laden juice. Add a line wedge and you have a cocktail! No-sugar-added hot chocolate rather than sugar free. A banana with peanut butter. It's a step in the right direction. I don't feel deprived, I don't feel powerless, and I'm not berating myself for eating a package of oreo cookies.

I have found that cutting out added sugar, saturated fat and processed foods, gradually eliminated all desire for these so called 'treats'. Eating all I want even if bingeing although not to be preferred and still working on this of natural, unprocessed, generally plant foods keeps my weight steady.

I find that since I started eating healthy, I don't have the same cravings I had before. Now, those ads for sugary, greasy food don't look appetizing at all.

I love PF Chang's chicken lettuce wraps, so I tried my usual tuna, grilled leftover chicken and beef wrapped in tuna- wonderful! I also find that the lo-carb tortillas make great wraps, too.

I have found a very forgiving banana loaf recipe at http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/fairtradebananabread_72082 I use low fat Flora, Splenda sugar replacement and swap out one of the eggs for a dribble of milk! All of my friends love the cake and I would challenge anyone to tell the difference between the original recipe and my healthier option. Also 1lb of this 2lb cake is banana so it must count as a fruit portion too :
