Do you set huge exercise goals for yourself that you couldn't possibly accomplish? Do you pay for expensive gym memberships, equipment or DVDs that you never use? Do you always intend to exercise but then tell yourself that you don't feel like it? If so, you're not alone. This week's tip could help you finally get out there and start moving.

We all know that exercise makes a huge difference to your health, your well-being, and your peace of mind. But, why is it so hard to do it, and do it consistently? Well, the reason is not that different from why it's hard to eat the right things even though we know what they are. There is a rebellious side of all of us that sabotages our success. It is the childlike part of ourselves that doesn't want to be told what to do. It doesn't want to climb the rope in gym class or have to run a mile. It just wants to sit inside and watch TV. It is the part of you that's willing to cut off your nose to spite your face. In the eleventh week of the Shrink Yourself program we help you understand your rebellious self so that you get to be the one who powerfully chooses when, and how much you exercise. Join Now!. Some simple tips that you can use to tame your rebellious self and exercise more are: setting small goals, enlisting a buddy, and not waiting until you feel like exercising.

  1. Set Small Goals - You can commit to five minutes of exercise a day or one exercise session a week. Only when you've met that goal for a few weeks should you add more. This leads to a feeling of success instead of failure.
  2. Enlist a Buddy - Making a date to exercise with a friend can make a huge difference. You help each other stay accountable and it's more fun.
  3. Don't Wait Till You Feel Like It—You may never feel like exercising so it's better to just put it on a calendar and do it like any other necessary responsibility.

Remember, you are in charge. Even finding a way to incorporate a small amount of exercise can make a big difference. And once you're doing it consistently and seeing the results you'll be more likely to add more. Before you know it, you'll be a person who exercises regularly instead of one who regularly resists exercise.

This is a great article and motivator, especially for this time of year. I was someone who used to hate exercise. I trained myself to roll out of bed and into my workout clothes. I found that was half the battle, getting out the door! I've learned to love exercise and have gone from zero exercise to the goal of an hour minimum per day. I've lost over 130 lbs and have approx 40 lbs to go to my goal weight. Exercise along with a proper nutritious weight loss program and plenty of hydrating water has made the difference in my health and well being. Reading emotional eating book such as Shrink Yourself has unlocked a knowledge to understanding things about myself things like the rebellious self, that was mentioned in this article. Thank you for all of the wisdom that you share.
