Do you get overwhelmed by the amount of weight you have to lose? Do you look at a project or a cluttered garage and simply don't know where to start? Does the idea of facing a problem seem too big to bear? If you answered yes to any of these questions you could be pushing yourself into a paralyzed state just by the way you look at things.

When children are learning to read they are more successful if they're given a page with only one sentence on it rather than a whole page of writing. You might see that either way they have to read one line at a time, but just seeing tons of words can make a new reader so overwhelmed that aren't even willing to try. This same sense of overwhelm can sabotage your efforts to lose weight. You don't have to get a whole week of eating perfect. When you break it into small steps you can just focus on the next food choice in front of you. You don't have to lose 20 or 50 or 100 pounds all at once, you can face things one pound at a time. Break things down into small tasks and you're more likely to succeed. This can apply to facing a problem, clearing your clutter, or losing the weight you want. How you look at things helps decide if it's daunting or doable.

Thank you so much for this tip. It is one of my missing keys. I become overwhelmed so easily and I avoid the task and the cycle starts all over again.

Thanks you for giving me permission to take it one small step at a time. I tend to look at things in an all or nothing fashion, and undermine my own success, but this way I can celebrate each small step forward.

I just started doing this. Instead of always looking at the 40lbs. that I'm aiming to lose, I've broken it down into a series of smaller 5-10lb. goals. Trying to achieve the next small goal is much less overwhelming than always looking at the larger goal. Since I've set up a *reasonable* timetable from reaching each goal, I also feel less of that impatient feeling of "When am I going to lose this 40lbs., I'm never going to get there!" Instead I I feel like I have a handle on just how long this will take, and while I still do wish I was there already, I also can answer my own question. "When am I going to get there? - Oh yeah, probably around February 2010". I'm calmer and somewhat more patient with the whole process. Of course part of me is starting to think, what's the rush? Maintenance may be even more challenging than losing weight! -
