Tip of the Week: Think Yourself Thin

By now you might realize that weight loss begins in your mind. It really is a case of mind over matter. What you might not realize, however, is that while your thoughts create your food choices, conversely your food choices also create your thoughts.

A good food choice starts in your mind. When you stay aware and think things through, you're more likely to make a good food choice-a choice that keeps your weight and health in mind, and isn't fueled by the need to immediately gratify yourself. And when you make a good food choice, your positive thoughts increase-you feel more empowered, more hopeful, and quite simply, better about yourself. This positive feeling makes it easier to make a good food choice the next time. In other words, the more good food choices you make, the easier it gets. Success builds on itself. Balls in motion, stay in motion. And by creating momentum, you keep yourself in a focused, aware state of mind that makes your goals so much more attainable. Not only will this make your health and body improve but by powerfully relating to food your confidence will also increase in all areas of your life.

I live in a fat head. I lost 125 pounds over the last 18 months and my mind definately has not caught up to my body. I think I am fat, but I am not. It is very hard when I have such severe body dismorphia to think myself thin. I reach for the size 12 or 14 after all I was a size 22 even though I am a size 6. When I try on a small item, I am amazed it fits me or I am certain it is still on the store rack because it must have been mis-sized. I cannot sit in one seat on the subway, because my heaf thinks I need two seats. Just thinking muself thin has not doen it for me and I welcome suggestions on how to have a thin head.

KMG: Give yourself time to adjust to your new body size. It's not surprising that you still have a fat head, since I imagine you were heavy for much of your life. I suggest frequently consciously noticing your body size, like you did in your examples, and eventually you'll believe it. Have patience with yourself--this is a journey, after all. And congratulations on your your healthy new weight!

I'm like KMG. I lost 120 pounds from 258 to 138 in 2005. I went from a size 22 to a size 6 in 9 months. Because my head was still into FAT, I regained 50 of the 120 pounds I lost. Now, I'm wearing size 12 and STILL think of myself as FAT!! In the last three weeks, I have gone back to the food plan I was on when I lost the 120 pounds. I have weaned myself off of sugar, flour and wheat once again and am now feeling the physiological changes in my body. I no longer crave sweets and pizzas and salty things. The best I can hope for this time around is to lose the weight slowly enough so that my head and my body are on the same page at the same time. My goal is to lose the 50 pounds by April of 2010. I'm going for the long term weight loss and the being size 6 for the rest of my life!!

A big part of keeping weight off is learning to readjust to your new body. Many people that don't take the time to get to know their new body run back into the perceived safety of the extra weight. This is something that gets covered in the Shrink Yourself program.

With me it is the other way round. I have gained 5 or 6 kg in menopause, despite a lot of exercise I teach 10 classes a week and go on short runs 4 x a week and eating quite healthily. I feel very uncomfortable, as all my clothes are tight. But I think I am thin and get a shock every time I look in the mirror or put on a pair of pants that are too tight. It seems to be very difficult to get back to my weight, although I am a vegetarian and eat a lot of fruit and vegetables and cook with little fat. But I do love chocolate, however I have cut down drastically on my usual consumption. Seems like nothing I do helps.

KMG you are so funny. I myself live in a thin head. I was thin most of my life and now am not. I am amazed at the size I HAVE to buy. But I am losing so hopefully my body will catch up with my head again.

KMG: I think thinking yourself thin is a matter of making a decision in your conscious mind. Just as the decision was made to lose the weight, stick to your plan, begin exercising, etc., you need to make the decision to think of yourself as thin, which you now are! So the moment you find yourself thinking that you are fat, just stop the thought in its tracks, and remind yourself of what the truth is! Just as losing the weight is a process, so is keeping the weight off. And it all begins and ends in the mind!

HEY LADIES, MY THOUGHT FOR TODAY IS REMEMBER THE MOST IMPORTANT TIME IS BETWEEN I FEEL LIKE EATING SOMETHING AND PUTTING THAT SOMETHING IN YOUR MOUTH, WHAT DO I WANT? AM I HUNGRY OR IS MY HEAD TELLING ME TO FEED THAT FELLING INSYEAD OF FEELING THE FEELING? WHAT IS HAPPENING NOW? HAVE I BEEN HERE WITH THIS FELLING BEFORE? THAT FEW SECONDS THAT WE DEAL WITH DOZENS OF TIMES ADAY THAT IS WHERE WE CHANGE OUR LIFES IT ALL STARTS THERE AND AS WE LEARN TO STOP AND TAKE THE TIME TO ASK OURSELVES THE RIGHT ?S WE REALIZE IT REALLY IS ALL ABOUT FEELING THOUGHS FEELINGS, AND ASKING YOURSELF THE RIGHT ?S, LIKE IF I AM HUNGRY, WHAT IS MY BODY TELLING ME IT NEEDS? I HOPE YOUR DAY IS GREAT YOU ALL DESERVE IT.

I can only seem to make posative food choices for a couple of days then something upsets me or I feel upset and I cancel out all my good work by stuffing like mad,I wish I could just eat normally and why do I always turn to food for comfort, I managed to get to my target weight a few months ago but my weight is slowly creeping up and up and I cant seem to get the right mindset to get in under control again, any suggestions?

i am in a similar boat as some others that have commented. i lost nearly 80 lb in the past year, and have given myself the online SY program as a present! i am determined NOT to regain the weight this time as i always have in the past. i see that Michelle says that this is covered ion the SY program, but i am only on week two, and need help NOW, as my weight is creeping back up. I have been steadfast in maintaining my level of exercise since reaching my goal weight, but i find myself mindlessly eating when i am not hungry and bingeing. Even when i am aware that i am bingeing, i refuse to stop.

sasha said...

jsek, I think you and i need to check out the part of this website about 'you can't always have what you want" because I am the same way sometimes, I know I shouldn't have it but I keep eating it....

Peg said...

Hi Ladies, I can really relate to both sides of the discussion. I recently released 80 lbs and still struggle with body image issues. I'm always comparing myself to the REALLY thin girls and judging myself harshly. It really is all about mindset and attitude - learning to love and accept ourselves exactly as we are and then working to treat ourselves with love and respect. I find that when I can treat myself kindly - in my thoughts and actions, the food is a non-issue. Many days it's a real challenge because the old "tapes" want to be heard. I'm learning to be vigilant and loving and wish the same for you.
