Tip of the Week: Weight Loss Begins With Speaking to Yourself Kindly

Many people who struggle with their weight speak to themselves in the privacy of their own minds in a harsh, cruel or even abusive way. In a way that they would never dream of speaking to someone else. It's the voice that calls you fat, or lazy, or belittles you for not having enough discipline or willpower. This kind of voice, with weapons of shame and guilt, might get you to white knuckle it for a little while and lose weight. But the weight loss doesn't stick and you're left with only a drill sergeant in your brain.

The tip of the week is to begin to listen to that voice in your head. If it's unkind, pay attention to how you can change the vocabulary. To lose weight and keep it off (especially when you're an emotional eater, binge eater or compulsive overeater) is hard work. Talk to yourself in a tone that understands that. Use loving and compassionate words. And in the most simple of terms, be nice to yourself.

what a wonderful idea not to chastise or selfs but to understand what emotional eating is all about I am a senior citizen who has lost 70lbs in the last 15months and intend to keep it off with the help of God and ideas like this thank you

I have found that if I stay connected with my friends, do for others, read positive things, walk and enjoy nature, the hunger seems to disappear. I am an emotional eater, as most of us are I think. This is how I maintain my weight. You need group help to lose, but once you get there, do these things to keep it off.

What if you try to do this, but there are others around you who contantly judge and critique your weight?
