The Rolling Stones popular song You Can't Always Get What You Want gave us an important mantra that we can apply to food. There is a childlike part of each of us that wants what we want, when we want it. Does this childlike part of you rule what you eat?

In adulthood there are some realities that we must face. Taxes need to be paid. You have to get up early to take care of the children. And you have to make certain choices if you want to be healthy. It may not always be fun but it is part of being a grown-up. Gone are the days when you could do or eat whatever you want and not have to deal with consequences. If you let the childlike part of you win out, these realities (even the harsh ones) will leave you wanting to rebel. You might even hear a voice in your head telling you that no one is going to tell you what to eat. Don't let this inner kid win. Approach food like an adult. Be realistic about how many desserts or treats you can have and still look and feel the way you'd like to look and feel. If you realize that you can't always get what you want, you might find that you get what you need. And what you need is to be the one in charge of your food choices.
